Campaign Traits

Hobgoblins become adults and immediately enlist in the military. One year later, those still in the military are considered worthy and productive members of society, and become full members of the armed forces with the rank of Private. The most shameful way to be forced from the military is to show fear.

You were each in the midst of what’s known as “The Year of Hell”, trying to prove yourselves worthy of the rank of Private, when you were faced with a terrifying vision of your greatest fear. Your entire squad fled in terror. Later discussions revealed that not everyone saw the same thing, leading you to believe that the fear was magically induced. Yet another reason to hate arcane magic!

At character creation each player chooses one trait to represent his or her greatest fear. Whenever you encounter your greatest fear you must succeed at a Will save (10 + the encounter’s challenge rating) or be shaken for the duration of the encounter.

Arcane Magic

Like most hobgoblins, you have a deep and abiding hatred of arcane magic. In your case, your also harbour a secret terror of magic.

Benefit: You gain a +2 trait bonus to saving throws against arcane spells. You gain a +1 trait bonus to your fighter level for the purposes of meeting the prerequisites of the Disruptive and Spellbreaker feats. You feel no fear concerning divine spells, and in fact possess a magical tattoo that contains a casting of cure light wounds. Activating the tattoo is a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity, after which the tattoo fades away.

Chaos Beings

You just want everything to make sense, but the multiverse keeps insisting on spitting up creatures that don’t follow the rules.

Benefit: Knowledge (the planes) is always a class skill for you, and you receive a +1 trait bonus to it. You have a -2 penalty to Charisma-based skills when in the presence of a creature with the Chaos subtype.

Creatures of a Specific Kind

A certain kind of creature, such as dogs or bears, terrifies you.

Benefit: Trophies made from this creature feel impressive to you. Not only are you impressed by anyone displaying them, you radiate self-confidence when wearing such a trophy; this gives you a +1 trait bonus to Charisma-based skills when this trophy is prominently displayed.

Drowning

Any time you get in water you feel afraid of drowning.

Benefit: You automatically receive a Reflex save to avoid falling into water. If you would normally receive such a saving throw you may roll twice and take the best result.

Elves

The ancient enemy of the hobgoblins is the elves. You hate them, and they hate you. Also, you’re afraid of them.

Benefit: You automatically confirm any critical threats against elves.

Heights

You feel dizzy when there’s a large open space beneath you.

Benefit: You gain a +2 trait bonus to your Combat Maneuver Defence when resisting a bull rush or trip attempt while standing on the ground.

Solitude

The thought of being alone makes it difficult for you to breathe.

Benefit: Teamwork feats work particularly well for you. Using Precise Strike grants you a +2 trait bonus to attack and damage rolls.

A Specific Individual

Your greatest fear is of someone specific, whether you’ve met this individual or not. You have spent a great deal of time imagining ways to avoid this person.

Benefit: You gain a +4 trait bonus on Stealth checks when in the presence of this person. Please add this NPC to the wiki or indicate that the GM should do so.
