Character Creation Guidelines
Hobgoblins live in a very militaristic society that celebrates courage. Having been subjected to some sort of fear-inducing magic, one squad ran from the field of battle and can’t return home until they’ve proven themselves beyond question. The object of this campaign is to become such obvious paragons among human pirates that no one can help but agree that they absolutely deserve to be Privates in their tribe’s army, no matter what kind of magic was used against them.
Hobgoblins hate arcane magic. They distrust it in every form. They like technology, and they love fire.
Hobgoblin Racial Traits
- Medium humanoid (goblinoid)
- Speed 30 ft.
- +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution: Hobgoblins are fast and hearty.
- Darkvision: Hobgoblins can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
- Sneaky: Hobgoblins gain a +4 racial bonus on Stealth checks.
- Languages: All hobgoblins begin play speaking Goblin and Taldane. Hobgoblins with high Intelligence scores can choose any of the following bonus languages: Draconic, Dwarfish, Infernal, Giant, Orc, Polyglot, and Undercommon.
Characters begin as level one fighters. By default this is the core version of fighter, since you were all trained at the same place, but if there’s a logical reason for a fighter archtype then please feel free to present it. There is no requirement that future levels be as fighter; any class from an approved source is available for multiclassing.
Characters are built on the point-buy system, and begin play with 20 points.
This campaign uses the allegiances rules instead of alignment rules. Each character starts with an allegiance to hobgoblins. No PC begins play with an allegiance to Law.
Each character receives Precise Strike as a bonus feat. Please note that if a character’s Dexterity is less than 13 then the feat is unavailable for use. Players also start with one campaign trait and one standard trait.
As the campaign begins, the characters have all been poisoned while drinking in a tavern in Port Peril. They wake up aboard the Wormwood, forced to join a crew of pirates. All of their gear has been taken from them. This gear consisted mostly of standard hobgoblin military equipment (studded leather armour, light steel shield, longsword, longbow with 20 arrows) but each player may also describe one additional object that they had that has been taken away from them.
